In a surprising move, 2nd year RB Glen Coffee announced his “retirement” from the San Francisco 49ers and the NFL. At this time, his reasons are unknown, but for the 49ers (and you Fantasy players) this has some interesting effects regarding Pro Bowl HB Frank Gore. After 4 straight 1,000 yard seasons, Gore is showing some wear and tear. Head Coach Mike Singletary was looking to focus on a run heavy offense, after drafting two OL in the first round of this year’s draft. Coffee was to split carries with Gore, with 6th round pick RB Anthony Dixon to help alleviate pressure as well.

Singletary, who said Coffee “was having a fine camp,” said Coffee’s abrupt decision caught the team by surprise.
Coffee didn’t show up for Thursday’s afternoon practice and then informed Singletary of his decision Friday morning.
“I appreciate his honesty and I appreciate him not coming out here and going through the motions,” Singletary said. “He said his heart isn’t in it. It’s his decision. He is a man, and the last thing that I’m going to do is disrespect him and try to drag something out.”
Coffee’s departure leaves the 49ers with Dixon and fifth-year veteran Michael Robinson as the only halfbacks on the roster behind Gore. Singletary said the 49ers will immediately look to bring in another running back.

Going 49th (conveniently) to the San Francisco 49ers, is FS Taylor Mays out of USC. Surprised when passed over by ex-head coach Pete Carroll of the Seattle Seahawks, Mays still goes north, to Mike Singletary & the Niners. Already a beefed up Offense, this is a nice pick-up for San Francisco, especially so far into the draft.

Forget Desean Jackson, this was the highlight of today’s Eagles game. (via The 700 Level)

The Eagles mascot was about as agile as all the 49ers who tried to cover Desean yesterday.

So in today’s edition of “Genius Move of the Day”, it seems rookie Wide Receiver holdout Michael Crabtree has not only flown to the San Francisco Bay to re-ignite talks with the 49ers, but he’s brought in M.C. Hammer to help with negotiations. Yes, that MC Hammer.
Per Matt Maiocco of the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat, aging and largely irrelevant ’90s rap star M.C. Hammer was present for Tuesday’s meeting between receiver Michael Crabtree and the 49ers. So for the first time since Master P handled the negotiations of Ricky Williams’ rookie contract with the Saints, an entertainer apparently is trying to get his fingerprints onto an NFL deal. It wouldn’t be Hammer’s first flirtation with the NFL. Way back in ‘91, he was a derby-and-cane fixture at Falcons games, at the behest of cornerback Deion Sanders. It’s unclear what Hammer’s role, if any, might be. But Maiocco points out that an employee at the hotel where the meeting occurred said that Crabtree was heard telling Hammer, “Get it done.”

And thus is the way of the NFL. One week you’re rushing for 207 yards and 2 touchdowns. The next, you go one play & strain your ankle. Such is the story of San Francisco 49ers RB Frank Gore. If you own in him your Fantasy League, it’s probably best you hold on to him, but feel free to cry about this for awhile. Looks like the dude will be back for their October 25th game at Houston, just after the team’s bye week. Until then, try to pick up his substitute Glenn Coffee, as it’s not like the Niners have the most impressive passing situation anyways.

The San Francisco 49ers are just the latest in the line of teams that have & will get used to seeing Minnesota Vikings WR Percy Harvin from this standpoint. In case you haven’t noticed, the rookie out of Florida has a touchdown (like this 101 yard Kick Return) in each game this season so far.
His 101-yard kickoff return gave the Vikings a 20-17 lead late in the third quarter, but that’s too antiseptic. What made the return amazing to me was that he did not appear to have been touched on it. How often do you see a touchdown on a return accomplished without any of hte 11 defenders touching the return man? I asked Harvin if anyone hit him or even grazed him on the return. “I don’t believe so, sir,” said Harvin over the phone from the locker room.

If Van Wilder were here, he’d tell you Fantasy Football managers to “Write that down.”
